House extensions in Weybridge

Two of our finished extensions are in Weybridge: a double storey extension as part of a full refurbishment, and a back and side extension with a glazed gable to the garden. We manage the whole build and coordinate the different trades, from the initial works through to the completed extension.

A double storey extension and full refurbishment

A full refurbishment of a Weybridge house, with a substantial double storey extension, a new bedroom in the roof space and a bathroom under a dormer.

Downstairs, the living space and the kitchen open into one run with a herringbone floor, and the kitchen island sits under a roof lantern with glazing out to the garden.

A back and side extension with a glazed gable

A back and side extension in Weybridge with a glazed gable to the garden, a new garage and new paving.

Before the work, the back of the house had an old conservatory. Now bifold doors in the new gable open onto new paving, and the elevations have been reworked.

We photographed it before, during and after: the house as it was, the site set up, the new roof trusses going on, and the finished rear, side, garage and front.

From a client in Weybridge

5 out of 5 stars.

“We recently had Wentworth Design & Build carry out our double-storey extension in Weybridge and couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out. From start to finish everything was handled really well and the quality of the work was excellent. The team were reliable, friendly and kept us updated throughout the job, which made the whole process much easier. They took real pride in their work and the finished extension looks fantastic. We’re very pleased with the end result and would definitely recommend Wentworth Design & Build to anyone considering an extension or renovation.”

Planning an extension in Weybridge

Weybridge is in Elmbridge, so a planning application for an extension here goes to Elmbridge Borough Council. These points come from the Planning Portal's guidance and the council's own pages.

  1. Permitted development

Many extensions can be built without applying for planning permission, under rules known as permitted development, as long as specific limits and conditions are met. Go beyond them and you will usually need householder planning permission.

  2. Double storey extensions

Under permitted development, an extension of more than one storey can go no more than three metres beyond the original rear wall of the house, and must be at least seven metres from the boundary opposite. Its roof pitch should match the house as far as practicable.

  3. Side extensions

A side extension built under permitted development can only be single storey, no more than four metres high and up to half the width of the original house. Any side extension of more than one storey needs householder planning permission.

  4. Conservation areas

Weybridge has conservation areas, including Weybridge Town Centre, Monument Green and Templemere. In a conservation area, every side extension and every rear extension of more than one storey needs householder planning permission, and cladding the outside is not allowed under permitted development. The council's website shows how to check whether your house is in one.

What building an extension involves

Most extensions need approval under the building regulations. These are the parts of the build it looks at, from the Planning Portal's guidance.

  1. Foundations

A two storey extension puts more weight on its foundations than a single storey one. The soil matters too: in clay, trees nearby can mean the foundations need to go much deeper than you might expect.

  2. Opening up the house

Once the extension is weatherproof, an opening is normally made through the old outside wall. A new or wider opening needs the wall above it supported, usually with two new beams.

  3. The rest of the building

Doors and windows, drainage, electrics, walls, roofs and any new kitchen or bathroom all have to meet the regulations too. You also need to find out whether the work falls under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996.

  4. What we carry out

Foundations, groundworks, drainage, brickwork and blockwork, structural steel, roofing, insulation, windows and doors, plastering, electrics, plumbing, flooring, kitchens and internal finishing.

Weybridge extension questions

Have you built extensions in Weybridge?

Yes. Two of our finished jobs are in Weybridge: a double storey extension as part of a full refurbishment, and a back and side extension with a glazed gable. Each has its own page with photographs.

Do I need planning permission for an extension in Weybridge?

Not always. Many extensions are permitted development, within limits on size, height and position. Outside those limits, and for any side extension of more than one storey, you need householder planning permission. In a conservation area, side extensions and rear extensions of more than one storey always need it.

Who decides planning applications in Weybridge?

Elmbridge Borough Council. From 31 October 2026, under new national rules, householder applications such as extensions are decided by the council's planning officers, and are no longer referred to the planning committee by councillors.
